Chartridge - More about the Pest House

A pest house was a cottage or house set aside for poor people unlucky enough to fall sick with an infectious disease - most commonly smallpox. Basic furniture, equipment and nursing were provided for out of the Poor Rate. 1730 was a particularly bad year for smallpox in Chesham Parish - 42 out of a total of 139 burials were of smallpox victims.
