Chartridge - More about occupations
Musson and Craven's 1853 commercial directory lists the following occupations in Chartridge: 6 farmers, 2 blacksmiths, 1 victualler (The Portobello), 1 straw plait manufacturer, 1 joiner and builder, 1 coal dealer and 1 infant school mistress. The school had 30 children, who were taught by Mary Nash. The present-day Bell public house in Chartridge Lane once sold only beer, but licensees for the Portobello public house, also in Chartridge and now a private house, are listed in a register and go back to at least 1756.
