Chartridge - More about the churches...
The present-day parish of Chartridge is a civil rather than an ecclesiastical parish and does not have its own parish church. The nearest Anglican church is St John's Church at Bellingdon, which is part of the Parish of Great Chesham or St John the Baptist in neighbouring parish, The Lee. Chartridge Reading Room (Chartridge Village Hall) was used for Anglican church services at one time and it is believed that the congregation adopted the name St Christophers. Chartridge Mission Church was built as a Baptist chapel in 1844.
A 'chapel', now a private house, is marked on the OS map at Great Hundridge Manor. This was built in the 13th century and dedicated to King Edward the Martyr. The chapel was provided for the people of Hundridge and Hyde Heath who may have had difficulty travelling the 2 or 3 miles downhill to Chesham Parish Church. No such concession seems to have been made for the people of Chartridge and Asheridge.
